the elevation. is aerial yoga done the yoga studio. way

while it might look like a cross between cirque du soleil and gymnastics, weightless yoga as it is also known—doesn’t require you to be an acrobat to reap the benefits. in fact, this class is open to all levels of practice and experience, and no special yoga experience is necessary.

the elevation at the yoga studio. utilizes silk hammocks suspended from the ceiling in combination with traditional yoga poses. you actually perform some of the same poses you do on a yoga mat, except you are using the hammock as a prop to support you through the various flows. the purpose of the hammock is to help you improve flexibility and build strength, while allowing you to do more challenging poses without added pressure on your shoulders, spine, or head.

if you always dreamed of feeling the weightless sensation of flying, then you will have fun with this form of yoga. hammocks are just inches above the floor, so there really isn’t a risk of falling from any great heights. everyone is encouraged to move slow and at their own individual pace.

what are some yoga benefits?

this yoga class makes for some pretty striking photos, but it’s not meant to be a performance art the way it sometimes looks. when we do this specific type of  yoga the hammock is just below hip height, and most moves are performed with at least one foot, leg, or arm on the ground. inversions are sometimes the exception but you don’t have to be graceful or have perfectly pointed toes to enjoy weightless  yoga and get the full benefits.

antigravity yoga pose

here just some unique yoga benefits:

  • engaging in postures without compressing the spine or putting pressure on joints.
  • it can help chronic back pain.
  • it builds strength.
  • it makes inversions easier.
  • you will have a sensation of lightness.

what to expect at the elevation. yoga

this yoga class will connect you to the fun-filled, playful and innovative experience of yoga arts. you will explore unique sequences in the hammocks that combine basic yoga poses, core work, inversions, and deep release stretching that will leave your mind and body feeling both invigorated and relaxed.

as far as what to wear, a fitted long-sleeve top and leggings are ideal to help with the pressure from the hammock on your body. you’ll be hanging upside down, so you don’t want to wear clothing that will fall off or expose any parts of your skin that are sensitive. you won’t get the yoga benefits if you’re worried about your clothes.

wear clothing that is comfortable and has some movement, but nothing too loose. you want clothing that you can move around in easily and comfortably, but not so baggy that it gets caught in the hammock, or moves out of position. avoid zippers, jewelry and lotion. non-slip grippy yoga toe socks are required and can be purchased in the studio.
