the yin. – restorative yoga and yin yoga done the yoga studio. way

yin yoga is a lesser known style of yoga in the west but it’s growing in popularity. initially called “taoist” yoga, yin yoga targets deep connective tissues and the web of fibrous connective tissue—fascia—that’s present throughout our entire body.

it’s a perfect complement to restorative yoga, which is a practice that is all about slowing down and opening your body through passive stretching. restorative yoga takes the mindfulness found in all disciplines of yoga to the next level.

the yin at the yoga studio. combines the best of yin yoga and restorative yoga into one outstanding class. an introspective practice, the yin offers students a chance to turn inward and nurture the calm, quiet center that is innate in all of us. it’s a practice in stillness, patience, and non-reactivity.

what are some benefits of yin yoga and restorative yoga?

both yin yoga benefits and restorative yoga benefits are similar, as the practices have complementary approaches and goals. both styles are a branch of hatha yoga, which balance the right and left sides of our bodies. both styles are also passive and restorative in nature.

here are some of the unique benefits of the yin, which gives you yin yoga benefits and restorative yoga benefits in the same class:

  • permission to rest, slow down and pause
  • regulates energy in the body
  • deep relaxation
  • encourages mindfulness
  • strengthens acceptance and detachment
  • teaches self compassion
  • releases fascia and flexibility and improves joint mobility

in both yin and restorative practices, the instructor lengthens, slows and cools down the body.  in comparison, in more “yang like” yoga, the teacher strengthens, flows and heats up the body. yin yoga benefits and restorative yoga benefits are numerous. and although the benefits are subtle, they make a tremendous impact not only in your daily grind, but in your other yoga and meditation practices.

what to expect at the yin.

the yin at the yoga studio. is a deliciously meditative experience that encourages deep release and relaxation. yin yoga poses and restorative yoga poses along with the use of essential oils will allow you to restore, heal, and rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul.

the floor-based yin poses are held for 3-6 minutes and focus on relaxing rather than contracting your muscles and lubricating the connective tissue of the body (tendons, fascia, and ligaments). this style of yoga helps release energy blocks in the body, improve circulation, and promote flexibility.

the restorative yoga poses are supported by yoga props and held for longer duration as well; little effort is needed to surrender into the benefits of each pose. the deep breathing and meditation techniques incorporated in this class will lead you into a blissful state while connecting you to your true essence.

this mellow class is a great complement to our flow classes and for students who would like to focus on a more meditative, stretched based practice. this format is also well suited for those who feel overwhelmed, anxious, or stressed with the demands that life can bring or just need time to quiet the mind and rest the body.
